Under EU Directive 2010/31 / EU (Article 2): A “Zero Emission Building” is a very energy-efficient building whose almost zero or very low energy required to meet its energy needs is largely covered by renewable energy sources, including energy produced on-site or near the building. Zero Emission Building (nZEB) has:
- high energy structural components,
- E / M installations of particularly high energy efficiency and
- a significant share of their energy consumption will be covered by renewable energy at the local level.
Current Situation
Buildings are responsible for approximately 40% of energy consumption and 36% of CO2 emissions in the EU, making them the single largest energy consumer in Europe. At present, about 35% of the EU’s buildings are over 50 years old and almost 75% of the building stock is energy inefficient.
